London Overview & Key Industries in the Region
London is a city in Ontario located about halfway between Toronto and Detroit. London was originally proposed as the site of the future capital of Upper Canada by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1793. Although it did not become the capital, it still remains a key city and is the 11th largest city in Canada.
London has a large focus on the healthcare and education sectors and it is home to Western University. London’s major industries also include the automotive manufacturing industry, the information technology (IT) industry, and the medical research industry. The area surrounding London is also home to some of the most productive agricultural areas in Ontario.
The majority of London’s population is white and Christian, with only 19% of the population being visible minorities. London is home to several arts and cultural festivals, including the London Ontario Live Arts Festival, the Home County Folk Festival, Rock the Park, and the London Fringe Theatre Festival.
Economic Trends
London has historically been known for its large automotive manufacturing industry. Currently, the automotive industry is still large, however, it did take a hit in the 2009 recession. In the wake of this, the information technology (IT) industry grew in London. 3% of the city’s workforce works in the IT industry, and there are 300 technology companies in London, making it a technology hub.
The London Health Sciences Centre is the largest employer in London with 15,000 employees. Another 5000 employees work at St. Joseph’s Health Care London. Medical research is another major sector in London. Western University is responsible for much of the medical research that occurs in London, and contributes $1.5 billion every year to the London economy.

London has the second largest barbecue rib festival in North America, known as the London Rib Fest.
London was the original proposed capital of Upper Canada.
London is where all the Chicken McNuggets in Canada are made.
London is the host of Sunfest, the second largest outdoor festival in Canada.
